Permanent Site – Nikopol!
June 25, 2010Nikipol!
We learned where we’ll be living for the next two years a few days ago, and just returned from visiting these places. I’ll be living and working in Nikopol, a town of 4,500 along the Danube River on the border between Bulgaria and Romania – check out the red star in the map below.
I’ll be working in a municipality and also with the local school and cultural center. Some of the major projects to be done include an infrastructure project to deal with the Danube River when it rises, and to promote tourism within the town to passing tour boats. I’ll go into more details regarding projects later on.
In the school, I expect to coach a little bit of girls basketball, and want to start a boys soccer team.
I’ll be replacing a current volunteer who works at the site now – Billy, and we’ll live and work together for 2 and a half months. Billy has done good work at the site, which is great in that he has forged paths into the community that will facilitate the creation and completion of projects. Additionally, because the town is used to a competent and successful volunteer, I’ll have to be at the top of my game, which is good, because I want to step up to the plate.
Here are some pictures of my future colleagues, and the town and municipality where I’ll work. There are more pictures on the Pictures page.

This is awesome. Hope everything is going well man. I am digging the posts. Lauren and I want to come out and visit. We are currently packing up all of our stuff to go out to Michigan. Leaving Portland July 5th or 6th.
Adventure: Michigan blog? …I’ll take a picture of Lauren with the caption as “Hostile Mid-western Native”.
