Food!

July 6, 2010

I’ve been thinking of a marketing slogan for Bulgaria, and something I’ve come up with is: “Never an empty plate or an empty glass.”

The culture here is very food and drink focused, so we always get to eat a lot of food. The food is usually dense, a lot of meat, oil and cheese are involved – generally, a lot of tasty goodness. In addition to heavy food, essentially every meal starts with a salad made of cucumbers and tomatoes with oil, vinegar and salt. The cucumbers and tomatoes are usually “Домашни” or “from the house” as in homemade and from the garden. We also get bread with every meal.

Basically: we get spoiled with fresh, homemade foods. These include both vegetables from the garden, and chicken and rabbit from the animal pen in the back of the house. Here are some pictures of some lunches and dinners.

Some highlights include:

  • fried zucchini
  • breaded and fried rabbit
  • Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, courtesy of the US
  • meatballs & potatoes
  • salad with cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce
  • fried cheese – this is great with the Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
  • macaroni and cheese that I cooked for a western style meal
  • margaritas made from fresh lemons & limes to go with the macaroni
  • more rabbit
  • and finally… bread, lots of bread
